Monday’s Finding: Jaw Dropping Statement Cakes

I have a lot of pretty for you today! In the past 10 – 15 years, wedding cakes have gone from a traditional symbol typically picked from a lineup of pre-created confections available in just a few flavors you pick out of a portfolio to wondrous works that serve as a cornerstone of reception decor and “sky’s the limit” custom flavors. I recently found a few folks on Pinterest that had collected gorgeous statement cakes that I too had to pin. Here are just a few of them. If you are looking for more, check out my wedding cake board on Pinterest: http://pinterest.com/bellememorie/cakes-wedding/

Tips or Trends Tuesday: Trend: Two Dozen Tall Layer Wedding Cakes

Wedding cakes have come a long way since I began my career way back in 1997. They have undergone a transformation from accessory to intricate works of art. Back in the late 90s and early 00s, sugar flowers exploded on the scene with amazing creations from Sylvia Weinstock to my personal fave, Ron Ben-Israel.

Since then, the cake industry has gone from the typical grocery store cake to a medium for visual artists and couples looking for bespoke designs that serve as a centerpiece for their reception and a showcase for their theme. The latest trend? Tall cake layers, especially mixed with their typically shorter counterparts.

Here are two dozen gorgeous tall layer confections to inspire your own cake design.

Monday’s Finding: Dream Cake Toppers

Have I got a fun post for you today! As you know, Belle Memorie is all about making your wedding do as unique as you and your love are. So, when Dream Cake Toppers approached me with their whimsical personalized cake toppers, I had to share them with you.

can-this

Unlike many other personalized cake toppers, Dream Cake Toppers can be personalized with any clothing, any posture, and even props! From cartwheels to riding in your classic car, and yes…even goth (this old goth bride says, “Yay!”), Dream Cake Toppers are in my opinion, the ultimate in custom personalized toppers. The level of personalization is off the charts!

You can get your topper made in one of two ways: custom heads with a pre-made body or a Dream Cake Toppers’ bespoke design where the sky is the limit. In addition, your Dream Cake Topper can be made with a bobble head. Just think, after the wedding, you can mount your topper to your car dashboard for a daily reminder of your special day!

From Dream Cake Toppers FAQ:
What are they made of?
Our cake toppers are made of a combination of materials that is unique in the market. The head is made of poly clay, giving it a chunky look, and a silky heavy feel. Polyclay has the extra advantage of mixing with color, so our heads and their hair is NOT painted, which inevitably looks cheap. The body in contrast is made of resin, allowing us to embed plenty of detail into it, and which makes it more durable. We do not paint the eyes, but have them specially manufactured in different colors for a very expressive look.

Can I make guitars, cars, sports accessories, pets, backgrounds, etc?
We can make a huge variety of props and accessories to bring your cake topper to life. Vehicles, sports accessories, weapons, pets, buildings and other sets can be made. Accessories have each to be sculpted and molded separately. Our price calculator can help you assess the price of the cake topper with or without them. We can sculpt almost any item as long as you can provide us a photo of it.

Can the heads bobble, can they be small?
The heads of your cake toppers can be of the bobblehead kind, which bounce around or be fixed in their place. You also have the choice to make the heads in a size that is not so cartoonishly big, but in proportion to the body. These smaller heads are possible, but they are not our standard product, they cannot bobble and resemblance may be lower given their size. However we offer them for couples who want a more elegant topper and find the oversized heads too much!

What do I need to order a pre-made topper?
All you need is the best photos you can get of the faces of the bride and groom. You also need to know their color of eyes.

What do I need to order a fully custom made cake topper?
You need good face photos and also photos showing the clothing and posture for each of the cake topper figurines, and photos of any accessories or vehicles that we need to make. Ideally you would decide the size of these accessories, but one of our experts can talk you through the decision to make sure it all fits together. It is very important that you show us with images what you want to make, since written explanations can lead to misinterpretations and mistakes. If you don’t have the images you need, Google Images is always a good source of photos that you can use to give us instructions.

Where can you ship?
We can ship anywhere in the world, as long as it is a destination where a commercial courier like Fedex, DHL or TNT can ship. PO Boxes and addresses such as military bases which are off the limits of an international courier are not possible. We are able to ship directly to your wedding destination if required.

How long does it take?
A pre-made type cake topper will arrive to you in 15 working days and a fully customized one will arrive between 5 and 6 weeks from your day of order. We suggest placing your order with as much anticipation as possible to make sure all goes smoothly during the wedding day.

So, take a peek below at some great examples of what Dream Cake Toppers can do for you. If you are loving them as much as I do, get the proverbial ball rolling by visiting their site and dropping them a line. Take care all and have a great day!

Monday’s Finding: Cakes, glamorous cakes!

Before we dive in to Monday’s Finding, I want to talk to you about how proud I am of my friends and community today. Last night was the candlelight vigil for the victims and their loved ones of the Aurora shooting. With talk of nefarious group/s planning to attend and disrupt the vigil, a few of my friends jumped in and created an event to counteract any negativity mourners might encounter. Through the power of Facebook, in less than two days, approximately 10,000 people attended and formed a human wall, linking arms to protect victims and their families from these nefarious hate mongers.

I couldn’t be prouder of my community and my state in how this tragedy has brought us all together and the outpouring of heroism and love that has been shown. I continue to pray for the victims and their families and I hope you will too.

On with today’s Monday’s Finding: gorgeous cake inspiration for your glam fete. Are you planning a glam themed wedding? Cake bling, feathers, metallics, ruffles, and out of the box shapes are great glamtastic decor for a cake that will likely be the centerpiece for your reception. Here are some great glamorous cakes I found via Pinterest:

Tips or Trends Tuesday: Tips: Wedding Cakes

Today we tackle the beast known as wedding cakes. The wedding cake for some is a definite reception focal point. It’s not only a symbol of a couple’s prosperity and fertility (thanks to the Romans), but also is often seen as a key decor element of the reception. If you are planning on going traditional and having a wedding cake, here are some of my tips:

  1. Word of mouth can be key. If you don’t have a bakery that you use for your special occasions, talk to your friends and colleagues. Find out what their faves are and take a peek at what those bakeries have to offer in terms of taste and style.
  2. Let your fingers do the walking. You don’t have to visit and do a tasting at every bakery you’ve heard of or that has appeared at that big bridal show you went to last weekend. Get on Google and check out the bakery virtually. Most wedding cake shops have their flavors, portfolios, and their prices right there on their sites. This is a good way to weed out your list. Wedding cakes (depending on your area) run from $2 to upwards of $15 a slice. Finding out ahead of time eliminates price tag letdown.
  3. Get your list to less than 4 contenders. Trust me, running the wedding cake gauntlet can leave you tired, conflicted about your faves, and lead to one big sugar crash.
  4. Call before you drop in. Some bakeries have a drop in policy, but many don’t. Before you go to taste at any bakery, give them a call to find out what their policies are on tastings. Here in the Denver area, my favorite bakery, Das Meyer Pastry, has walk-in tastings every Saturday. Other bakeries are by appointment only. Be courteous and call ahead to find out what the bakeries tasting policies are.
  5. Show up to your tasting with a clear idea of what you are looking for in a wedding cake. Allergies? Best let the baker know and see what he or she offers as an alternative. Desire a fondant creation? Some long established bakeries don’t work with fondant and many newer ones don’t do buttercream. Rustic or classic? Round or square? How many people? Show up with pictures and notes to make the most of your consultation.
  6. Never, EVER pick up your own wedding cake. It’s a recipe for a BIG disaster. Pay the extra money and let the professionals handle it. That way if there is a cake emergency, they can take care of it for you rather than sending your Maid of Honor down to the market to get a bunch of random cakes from the store bakery.
  7. On a budget? Steer clear of sugar flowers. They are laborious to create and will add a great deal to the price of your cake. Some flowers can run from $25 – $50 each (specifically peonies). Instead opt for fresh flowers and have your baker work with your florist to create a design that’s all you.
  8. Finally, don’t freeze that top layer. Many bakeries now provide you with an anniversary cake on your first wedding anniversary. Take advantage of that and leave the stale freezer burnt cake tradition at the curb. Use that top layer to serve your guests.

Here are some of my faves from a variety of bakeries:

Tips or Trends Tuesday: Trend: Vintage Inspired Wedding Cakes

Before you start thinking, “Hey, I thought vintage was dead? Didn’t they say that on Huffington Post?” I’m sure the author of that article didn’t realize the buzz her pronouncement would generate. I can unequivocally state that the vintage wedding is not dead! Why? Because those who love vintage and shabby chic weddings aren’t dead!

In my professional opinion, I see just as many couples wanting a vintage fete as I did a year ago. This is turning out to be a trend that is fast becoming a staple. If you love vintage, if the thought of collecting old tins and doilys from the thrift store makes your eyes light up, and if the thought of using architectural salvage in your wedding decor makes you, “Squee!” then I’m pretty sure you are wanting a cake that will reflect your vision.

Today I have for three boards full of vintage inspired cakes: rustic, shabby chic, and finally, glam.
