Wedding Wednesday: Spring Bridal Market Report: Gowns galore!

Happy Wedding Wednesday! The blog is back post Etsy Virtual Bridal show with my personal take on last week’s New York Bridal Market. Bridal Market takes place in April and October and is bridal fashion’s equivalent of Fashion Week. This Bridal Market, everyone is talking about the peplum trend. I have my take on it as well as my faves, which might surprise my long-time readers…think pink. On with the post!

Black and white gowns were all over the runway. Here are a few of my faves:

Spring Bridal Market- Black and White

My favorite short dresses…big surprise likes: David’s Bridal and St. Pucci, known for their over the top ball gowns, I was surprised to see this design house get on the short gown bandwagon.

One of my favorite trends, ethereal skirts. These tulle and chiffon concoctions give a bride the illusion of floating on a cloud be they ball gowns or mermaid silhouettes.
Bridal Market: Etheral, Floating
Another trend, ultra structured modern creations.
Bridal Market: Structured
Spot the decade: 70s inspired silhouettes.
Bridal Market- 70s inspired

Texture, was shown in a big way and continued the trend from October Bridal Market. Be it a full on head to toe texture extravaganza to a subtle textured hemline, 3D details are here to stay.

Everyone has been talking up the peplum. My take on it, the traditional peplum style is a bit…okay, but check out these designer’s take on it: asymmetrical, flowing and floral accented peplums take the peplum trend to a whole other level.

One trend I love: the sheath dress with a definite 1930s influence. Silky charmeuse (Spanx are a definite must with this fabric) and curve hugging lace, these 30s inspired gowns are definitely hot!
Bridal Market- Sheath 30s
Color is definitely pushing it’s way toward the top, offering brides an alternative to the traditional white and ivory. I love love love the continued introduction of color in to the bridal fashion repertoire.

Now for the moment my long-time readers are waiting for, my WTF? list. These designs just don’t hit the mark be they the midriff-bearing pantsuit, over-textured skirt and sleeves that look tacked on to what could have been a lovely mini, to the unflattering to any body silhouettes, these creations definitely push my WTF? meter to a whole new level.
Bridal Market: WTF?
Finally, my favorites. Are you sitting down? Yes, that is a pink ombre dress in my faves. Pink…me? Yep, you betcha. This ombre gown by Mark Zunino took my breath away. Oh, and let’s not overlook another surprise like, a ball gown. Isaac Mizrahi’s soft and subtle use of black in this gown is flawless. In my opinion, Marchesa hit the ethereal trend right on the button. Just the perfect balance of structure in the bodice paired with such gorgeous softness in the skirt = LOVE! Alvina Valentina’s and Badgley Mishka’s textured sheaths use just the right amount of three-dimensional detail to catch and not overwhelm the eye. My final fave is from Project Runway alum Carol Hannah. Not only is this greyish lilac creation a fabulous use of color, but the unconventional peplum and subtle beading makes it an all-around fave.
