Saturday’s Latest: Mod Ice Cream and the latest from the Etsy Virtual Bridal Show Team

On this week’s Saturday’s Latest, we take a peek at Mod Ice Cream, which makes some very cool and super fun earrings perfect for a bride or as bridesmaid gifts to coordinate with your sleek color filled fete.

“So you are probably wondering where I got this name? Well after I made a few of these lil’ beauties and put a pair I made for myself in my ears, I realized they looked like the greatest treat ever created, ICE CREAM of course! So they are modern scoops of ice cream to decorate your cute ears!”

“I got started about 3 years ago making wire wrap earrings, and beaded earrings, but nothing was selling and I was overwhelmed with setting a price range. One day I was dilly dallying in one of my Graphic Design classes ( I believe it was Typography ) and I had a bunch of prismacolor pencils and started drawing lil circles all over the place…I loved the look and thought they looked like confetti! So a few classes later I was dilly dallying again and started cutting them out with exacto knives and realized they looked like those fun stick on earrings we all had when we were like 5! I started researching materials that I could use to create earrings (again while in class, I am a horrible student), I came across resin and started my trial and error process. The earrings come in two different materials: first is a prisma color pencil/ marker that I color on sturdy sketch paper and then cut out with crafting punches, which allows me to keep the prices in a low $5 price range. Second I now work with clay and higher end materials to create a much better earring and yet still a fun low price, around $7! I hate over priced earrings, so I would never have it in me to sell them at a high price! I am currently working on a larger size and hope to get these up SOON! I love creating fun colorful works of art that you can wear in any situation, and that make an awesome gift for a great pal! Being on Etsy has allowed me to mail packages of creative love all over the world, and virtually meet some amazing people, not to mention I find it as one heck of a relaxing therapy.”

Monday’s Finding: Modest Wedding Gowns

Happy Monday! Yep, I know…grr.

Today’s Monday’s Finding came about as a search for wedding gowns on Etsy for the Second Annual Etsy Virtual Bridal Show (coming in March/April). I began to notice that modest gowns for Muslim, Mormon, Orthodox Judaism, and for those with a personal preference for more gown coverage were practically non-existent. In my search, I used the strictest modesty guidelines: no see through, elbows covered, no collarbone showing, and full lengths. I hope that some of my finds help you in your search for a gown that not only fits closely held modesty standards, but also inspires the dress of your dreams!

Saturday Surprise: Most Expensive Weddings

“On average, US couples spend $24,066 for their wedding. However, the majority of couples spend between $18,050 and $30,083. This does not include cost for a honeymoon or engagement ring.” -

Wow, that sort of makes my wedding budget look teeny weeny. Mr. Wondermous and I are looking to come in under $5,000 sans honeymoon (doing a CO mountain overnight or two and save for a trip for our 1st anniversary). Granted, I do have a few advantages considering I am a planner/designer, but when it comes to weddings, you can have a beautiful wedding on any budget. I’ve done events from $2,000 on up to $500,000 and both events were just as memorable for the clients as a million dollar event.

Speaking of million dollar events, I thought I would share a few of the most expensive weddings on record. Let’s start at the bottom with Donald Trump and Melania Knauss’ million dollar fete. Melania’s dress was 20% of the budget and the Grand Mariner cake weight over 200 pounds.

Next, we inch a little bit higher towards the most expensive wedding ever. Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes’ $2 million wedding took place in Italy at the 15th-century Odescalchi Castle. An interesting side note: the family of my former supervisor (Vice Chancellor of Advancement) at the University of Denver, owns Odescalchi Castle. No, she did not secure an invitation to the wedding. Anyhoo, the bridesmaids’ attire was designed by Giorgio Armani (as was the bride’s) and Andrea Bocelli sang during the ceremony.

Here we have a mere $5 million wedding: Chelsea Clinton to Marc Mezvinsky. Chelsea followed the growing “two dresses” trend: one more formal dress for the ceremony and a more casual dress for the party afterward. Chelsea’s dresses and those of her bridesmaids were designed by Vera Wang.

In February 2006, hotelier Vikran Chatwal and model Priya Sachdev married in a $15 million affair that was spread out over 10 events and three Indian Cities: Mumbai to Udaipur and Delhi. “Fifty thousand kilos of flowers were shipped in from Holland, Bangkok, and Calcutta, and 3,000 candles were burned. They went through 65,000 meters of fabric.” -

Finally, I present to you the most expensive wedding on record at $78 million, the wedding of Vanisha Mittal (daughter of billionaire Lakshmi Mittal) and investment banker Amit Bhatia. This wedding took place at Vaux le Vicomte, a 17th-century chateau in France, in 2004.

While us mere mortals may not be able to spend $1 million plus for our weddings, our weddings will be just as beautiful and our memories just as cherished.

Indian Wedding Inspiration

When Katy Perry and Russell Brand announced they were going to be married in India with a traditional Indian details, they set off a trend: incorporating elaborate eastern influenced touches in to weddings and other events. Hindu wedding ceremonies are one of the most beautiful and detail oriented weddings I have ever had the privilege to attend. Week long festivities and celebrations occur prior to the actual marriage. The groom’s family meets up with the bride’s family in a lively welcoming prior to the start of the ceremony. The groom’s entrance is often on an elephant, horse, or in some other manner such as a helicopter. A beautiful altar called a mandap is the focal point of the marriage ceremony and is elaborately decorated. Katy Perry and Russell Brand’s wedding photos have yet to be released and the word is that they have not sold the photos as of this time. Here is a little inspiration for you. The building shown is the actual building where their ceremony took place.
