Saturday’s Latest: Pink bridal gowns and the latest from the Etsy Virtual Bridal Show Team

Unless you’ve been living under a rock this past week, you know Jessica Biel and Justin Timberlake were wed last weekend in Italy. The buzz has been all about Jessica’s gorgeous Giambattista Valli pink bridal gown. Just in case you haven’t seen it…here ya go.

If you are considering a pink gown for your own wedding, consider a design from one of the members of the Etsy Virtual Bridal Show Team. Many of our designers and vintage purveyors have gorgeous pink gowns from Champagne to Bubblegum. In addition, most of them can create a custom design just for you! Here are some great pink gowns in a variety of styles: boho, vintage, 50s, classic, Great Gatsby style, etc. In addition, I have a roundup of great new bits and bobs from the team. Enjoy your weekend!

Theme Thursday: Rat Pack Stag Do

Bachelor parties have come a long way in the past few years. Many are getting away from the typical: go to a strip club and drink until you pass out on the night before the wedding party. If your groom really wants the conventional sort of do, then by all means go for it as long as it won’t invite the Drama Llama in to the mix.

For those who are looking for something different, take your groom’s likes and make a night of it. Is the groom a fan of fine cigars? Find a good cigar bar in town and arrange for a tour followed by some top shelf cigars for the groom and his friends. What about paint ball? Check your local fields and see if they can be reserved for a part of the day and spend the evening at your groom’s favorite restaurant. Make it all about your groom and you are sure to give him a great time with the friends and family he is closest to.

Today’s Theme Thursday is for a luxury loving Rat Pack sort of groom. This is definitely gonna set you back a few dollars, but if you have it, why not? Keeping true to the Rat Pack era, have a dress code with suits and ties. If you want to keep it authentic, slim fit suits are the way to go. Hire a classic 60s era limo for the night to be sure you are all drinking and partying safely. Then, head to a barber spa like The Art of Shaving and treat your groom to the total package. Follow that with dinner at a great Italian place (the one featured here is Venice Ristorante in Denver). Load up and check out a kick ass cigar lounge like The Robusto Room (Denver) pictured here. End the night with a real Rat Pack experience by finding out where Frank and the guys hung out while in your city. Frank Sinatra frequented the El Chapultepec Jazz Club here in Denver when he was in town.

Here’s a little board to get your gears turning as to how you can create a fabulous Rat Pack inspired night for your groom:

Rat Pack Bachelor

Stay tuned for Friday’s Favorites featuring Rat Pack inspired finds from the best of Etsy and Etsy Virtual Bridal Show shops.

Theme Thursday: Sailor Jerry Wedding

Norman “Sailor Jerry” Collins went around the world for nearly a decade courtesy of the Navy after a nomadic life of freight train hopping where he learned the basics of the tattooing . In his time at sea, he grew to love naval culture and the tattoos that often went hand in hand with the sailor aesthetic. Settling in Hawaii and setting up shop in Honolulu where he tattooed thousands of sailor and taught the trade to apprentice, Ed Hardy.

The “Sailor Jerry” aesthetic is one of defined lines, bright colors, and bold designs. Today’s Theme Thursday is for the couple that embraces the “Sailor Jerry” look and lifestyle. It’s been a fun one to put together and I hope you enjoy it.

Friday’s Favorite: Vintage Week: New Vintage Lady

In my preparation for Vintage Week, I came across New Vintage Lady on Etsy. As a still plus size woman (even after the loss of 125 pounds), I can tell you that finding plus size vintage clothing is a near impossible task. I thought if I got down to the size I am now, that a whole world would open up for me. It did, but vintage was not going to open up no matter how hard I knocked. Oh, you can find muumuu’s and no offense to my Polynesian friends, but muumuu’s aren’t exactly my style.

Okay, back to New Vintage Lady. What is so great about her shop is she not only has vintage reproductions in plus sizes to buy, but also patterns for those who’d like to DIY be they plus size or not. “I specialize in plus size vintage patterns (but carry items of all sizes!), reproduction patterns 40″ bust and over, clothing, notions, and vintage inspired creations often of my own design. All patterns have been checked for pieces and if anything is missing (be it a piece, instructions, etc) it will be described in the listing.” -http://www.etsy.com/shop/NewVintageLady

New Vintage Lady also has a blog: http://newvintagelady.blogspot.com and a website: http://www.newvintagelady.com.

FYI: I have sought permission from this vendor to use her photos of her work. Please do not use these photos for personal gain or copy the designs presented. This product is the livelihood, passion, and intellectual property of the artist and to copy these items or to use them for person gain is both highly unethical and in some cases is a violation of copyright law.

Theme Thursday: Vintage Week: Tiki!

It wasn’t until I met my ex-husband that I experienced the fun of anything Tiki. My first real experience of his love of Tiki was at Disneyland. I had been to Disneyland many times, but never really thought The Enchanted Tiki Room was worth waiting in line for. When he and I went to Disneyland our first time together, he dragged me in to what I thought was going to be animatronic boresville. I was wrong, it was a lot of fun and whenever I’m at Disneyland, I make it a point to get my Tiki on.

Sing with me…you know you want to!

My fun loving ex then told me about this restaurant in Rosemead (CA) called Bahooka. Bahooka was featured in the movie, Swingers. What a fun kitschy restaurant full of aquariums and the kitsch is more than just decor, it makes it’s way in to the food too. If you go, you must get the Bahooka Bowl. This drink is vodka, wine, and passion fruit juice served to you in a flaming bowl with two straws. Trust me, it’s totally worth the $20.

Bahooka Bowl. Pic from: http://blogs.laweekly.com/squidink/2010/10/just_drinks_where_not_to_eat.php and photo by Robyn Brown as stated on laweekly.com.

So, when I decided to do a Vintage Week, I had to throw in at least one of my favorite kitschy themes, and Tiki was definitely on the list. Tiki essentially refers to carved stone and wood human like statues of a variety of Polynesian cultures. Tiki became popular beginning in the late 40s as soldiers returned home after World War II. It boomed in the 50s and early 60s, losing its appeal in the 70s. With the rise in popularity of all things vintage, Tiki kitsch is making its way back in to our culture, especially with regard to events. If you like what you see on the inspiration board and want to begin your own collecting of vintage Tiki, I highly recommend Etsy and have included vintage Tiki items from a variety of shops here.
