Tips or Trends Tuesday: Trend: Event Scenting

No matter what sort of event you are planning, the focus is typically on the aesthetic. We utilize color palettes, custom tablecloth overlays, oceans of flowers, letterpress invitations, fireworks, etc. to wow our guests and put them in a celebratory mood. However, the smell of said event is almost always overlooked and one of the latest event and wedding trends, “scenting,” seeks to address that. Scenting is fast becoming a design must have.

When I plan an event, I always consider what I or the client want the room to smell like. I make sure that if it’s a garden party, the event smells like the flowers that surround it. When it’s a wintertime fete, I go to those rich baking scents that fill the room with comfort inducing strong vanilla and caramelized sugar ambiance.

I am a big believer that one should do more than simply plan and style an event. Whether the fete is a barn wedding or a celebratory gala make it more than just a party. Create memories for your guests. Give them a night to remember and scent is the best way to ensure your guests will remember your fabulous party fondly as that’s just how our human noggins work.

“Because the olfactory bulb is part of the brain’s limbic system, an area so closely associated with memory and feeling it’s sometimes called the “emotional brain,” smell can call up memories and powerful responses almost instantaneously.” -http://science.howstuffworks.com/environmental/life/human-biology/smell3.htm

So, how does one go about scenting? Well, if you want to DIY it, focus on one scent for your candles, diffusers, and candle warmers. Make sure that each area is well scented. It should be a faint scent, not overwhelming like, “HI, I”M PINE AND I’VE COME TO TAKE YOUR NOSTRILS HOSTAGE!”

Believe it or not, there are vendors who specialize in scenting events. If it’s within your budget to use a pro, then definitely take advantage of their services. Scenting and parfumerie can be difficult, especially when custom combining scents. Here are a few places that can help you scent your next event:
Scentevents
Aromascent
WAVScents
AromaPersona
NEOM Luxury Organics

So, why has the idea of scenting taken off? One person: Kate Middleton now Catherine the Duchess of Cambridge. She had the Jo Malone team scent Westminster Abbey with her favorite Jo Malone scents: Orange Blossom, Grapefruit, and Lime Basil Mandarin.

So, as you progress through planning your wedding or even a Super Sweet 16, consider the effect scent will have on your guests so that you can throw more than just a party, but an event your guests will be sure to remember.
