Tips or Trends Tuesday: Fascinating

From elegant parties to weddings, fascinators are all the rage. Fascinators were on trend prior to the Royal Wedding and since then their popularity has exploded. If you are sitting there wondering what in the world I am talking about, let Her Immanence, Martha Stewart, explain, “Bigger than a barrette, a fascinator is a hair accessory that’s worn to the side and is often made of feathers, flowers, or wisps of fabric. The fun, fanciful ornament is often embellished with crystals, beads, or loops of ribbon, and attaches via a comb or headband; some have a small, stiff, flat base that can be secured with bobby pins.” –http://www.marthastewartweddings.com/article/what-is-fascinator

Where did fascinators come from? For that answer, we go to Everything But the Dress. “By original definition, a fascinator, originating in the 1750s, refers to a fine head covering, usually a scarf made of crochet or lace. Although the term fell into disuse almost entirely by the 1970s, it has come back into vogue.” –http://everythingbutthedress.blogspot.com/2009/10/what-is-fascinator.html. ‘There appears to be no definitive explanation as to the origin of the name ‘fascinator’, however it’s a popularly held opinion that it came about due to the ‘fascinating’ qualities of these headbands in their ability to mesmerize the beholder with their elegant and elaborate nature.” –http://www.headstronghats.co.uk/couture.html Here are some great examples of fascinators you can find on Etsy:

In my opinion the reining king of amazing millinery (hat making) and wondrous fascinators is no other than Philip Treacy. If you watched the Royal Wedding, you heard his name mentioned repeatedly as ladies began to arrive at Westminster Abbey. He was also featured on season 8 of Project Runway as part of a contestant challenge. He won his first British Fashion Council Award in 1991 and designed hats for Chanel and Lagerfield. I leave you with a few examples of his genius:
